So Called Love Song Essays - Chapbooks, , Term Papers
So Called Love Song The so-called Love Song The ironic character of The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock, an early poem by T.S. Eliot (1888-1965) in the form of a dramatic monologue, is introduced in its title. Eliot is talking, through his speaker, about the absence of love, and the poem, so far from being a song, is a meditation on the failure of romance. The opening image of evening (traditionally the time of love making) is disquieting, rather than consoling or seductive, and the evening becomes a patient (Spender 160): When the evening is spread out against the sky / Like a patient etherized upon a table (2-3). According to Berryman, with this line begins modern poetry (197). The urban location of the poem is confrontational instead of being alluring. Eliot, as a Modernist, sets his poem in a decayed cityscape, a drab neighborhood of cheap hotels and restaurants, where Prufrock lives in solitary gloom (Harlan 265). The experience of Prufrock is set against that of unnamed women (13), collectively representing womankind. Their unattainable status is represented by their constant movement- they come and go- and their polite chitchat about Michelangelo, who was a man of great creative energy, unlike Prufrock (Harlan 265). We cannot imagine that they would listen to any love song by Prufrock, any more than they would find his name or his person attractive. A man named J. Alfred Prufrock could hardly be expected to sing a love song; he sounds too well dressed (Berryman 197).J. Alfred Prufrock indicates his formality, and his surname, in particular, indicates prudery. The powerful metaphor, a visual image of the yellow fog (15) in the fourth stanza, represents the jaundiced environment of the modern city, or Eliot's infernal version of the forest of Arden (Cervo 227). The image is ambiguous, however, because Eliot also makes it curiously attractive in the precision he uses in comparing the fog's motions to that of a cat who [l]icked its tongue into the corners of the evening (17). We also hear the fog, disquietingly, in that image, in the onomatopoeia of licked. Repetition of time, in the following stanza, shows how the world of Prufrock's being is bound to temporality. Prufrock speaks to his listeners as if they had come to visit him in some circle of unchanging hell where time has stopped and all action has become theoretical (Miller 183). Time is repeated, several times, but it is not only its inescapable presence that Eliot is emphasizing, but also the triviality of the ways in which we use it; the taking of a toast and tea (34). The melancholy of Prufrock's situation begins to emerge when he speaks of his experience of failures in love and life. The initial vitality of his invitation to go out into the evening is now replaced by images of the many evenings he has known, with their same disappointing conclusions. This meditation expands to include mornings, afternoons (50) - all of his life, in other words - which, in a famous image, he has measured out with coffee spoons (51). The emphasis on I in the poem, which we would expect in a dramatic monologue, is also typical of Romanticism, with its celebration of the ego. Again, in this poem, Eliot is pointedly unromantic, as the I that is revealed is fit not for celebration but for ridicule, especially when Prufrock shows that he has been repeatedly diminished, even reduced to a laboratory specimen, by others' evaluation of him. It is little wonder that his self-confidence, the essential quality of a successful lover, has been shattered. It is women, of course, who have delivered this judgement on Prufrock. He finds them powerfully attractive, with [a]rms that are braceleted and white and bare (63), but we notice that this image - like the eyes, earlier, that fix you in a formulated phrase (56) - does not indicate a whole person, but rather a fragment of a human being, almost lifeless, like [a]rms that lie along the table (67). We may be critical of Prufrock, but the objects of his desire are scarcely more desirable. The criticism broadens to encompass a society, even civilization, and Prufrock becomes a type of human being - modern urban man, perhaps

Strengths and Weakneses of The North and South essays
Strengths and Weakneses of The North and South essays There were many strengths of both the union and confederate states. But the most abundant strengths belonged to the Union. Such was the very large population. This enabled the Yanks to have more people to go to war, more people to work the industry, more people to supply goods by farming them, and most important of all, they had plenty more reserves to send to the war effort. Another strength of the Union was the Navy. The navy could set up a blockade of ships to intercept the goods traded between the South and Europe. This would put great strain on the Confederates; they would have to ration all of the supplies, and would die from starvation/ living conditions. And since 65% of the farmland in America was found in the North, the South had less means to find food. The Yanks had 90% of the factories in America; they manufactured iron, coal, copper, and sulfur. The North also had one of the best political leaders in the country, Abraham Lincoln. As for the South, there were not as many advantages. Although there were a few strengths, there eventually werent enough to repel the Union army. The Rebels were skilled in basic survival skills such as horse riding, hunting, and primitive weapons use. The south also had the better generals/military leaders, because most of the generals that were trained so well were natives to the south. The Rebels were fighting on their home ground, and had to protect their homes and way of life. They would fight for their family. And, because of the North blockading the cargo ships coming and going from Europe the supply lines were enormously short. On the whole the South just didnt have enough advantages to overcome the Northern armies. What the rebels lacked in food, people, land, and a monetary system, they gained in leaders. But with the Yanks many advantages such as vast railway lines, agriculture, population, political system, leaders, and abundant resources, the South just could not ov ...

This will help me and the student in the long run because we will have some goodwill built with each other, and they may be able to come to me with personal issues that are hindering their learning. The second thing I would do is listen to my students. It is a sort of dictatorship in the classroomâ⬠¦ will begin to normalize certain aspects of ideology. ââ¬Å"The social roles that we occupy throughout our lifetime, like child, student, or employee place us in relationships of unequal power and as a result of ideological value hierarchiesâ⬠(139). The power of Sovereignty Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words
The power of Sovereignty - Research Paper Example Inequalities in the exercise of power and disregard to justice are even more evidenced in the political scene in various regions around the world today. Such always stem from the need to advance once own course by ignoring and disregarding other people who they consider rather inadequate. Stigall, Blacksley and Jenks argue that an interesting scene is always created where people especially the government authorities always insist on maintaining their rights while at the same time violating and stepping on the rights of their own subjects. (Stigall, Blacksley and Jenks, 2009). This is a common occurrence experienced with most of the sovereignties around the globe today. The aspect of exercising single handed rule on the subject population is mostly experienced in dictatorial countries such as Syria, Egypt, Iraq, alongside other Arab countries famous for dictatorial cases. This is contrary to what Hobbes refers to in his social contract theory, leaving the state of nature and looking a t the advancement of oneââ¬â¢s own course at the expense of the others in the territory (subjects). According to the social contract theory, it is those in higher social ranks who seem to deserve their rights while those of the lower social ranking are often considered incapable of demanding for any form of rights. As a result of this, their rights are always abused in a bid to preserve those of the power in the society. This paper will look at the effects of electing a sovereign with regard to the protection of state rights and the protection of the people under this rule with reference to the Arab countries and democracy in these regions. Hobbes proposes in his theory that the election of a sovereign in any state always results in the creation of the state of nature in the regions under the control of the sovereign (Saul, 2008). This theory, I think does not hold enough water in as much as I know and believe given the many atrocities which have been experienced in many of the A rab countries such as Syria and Egypt in the recent past. Having the sovereigns in these states has done nothing much other than inflicting a lot of troubles and augmenting the rise in cases of inequalities in these states. These happen as the sovereigns strive to uphold their own rights at the expense of the other citizens. Many people have succumbed to death in these countries as they try to protest to regain their rights. The question in this case therefore is whether this is what Hobbes refers to as the creation of a state of nature. The state of nature according to my understanding with regard to the social and political contexts is when the ruling authority strikes a balance with the citizens under her rule to allow the participation and full regard of the subjects in state affairs. It is far from having the central government designing and deciding on every aspect of leadership. The contrary is however the truth in most of the sovereign ruling systems as in the cases of Syria and Egypt we have mentioned above. Brown and Hamzawy note that ââ¬Å"The tragic developments in Lebanon and Palestine- all with weak or failed state institutions- have enable Arab democracy pessimists dismiss easily any talk about positive political reforms as the fantasy of the western well- intentioned humanists- or misguided ideologues- who do not understand the real

Constitutional protections in criminal investigations Essay
Constitutional protections in criminal investigations - Essay Example However, in Minnesota v Murphy, an individual who was required to disclose the facts of an unrelated crime to his probation officer, was convicted on the basis of this information (Lupia, 1984, p. 673). With this ruling, the state was permitted to procure involuntary confessions that exploited the suspectsââ¬â¢ ignorance regarding their constitutional rights. With the Supreme Courtââ¬â¢s decision in Miranda v Arizona, procedural safeguards were firmly established. These protections related to the right against self ââ¬â incrimination (Grewell, 2005, p. 727). In addition, these rights ensured that the police did not resort to torture and other coercive measures during interrogation. Moreover, the reliability of the evidence obtained from the testimony of the witness was ensured (Grewell, 2005, p. 728). As such, the Fifth Amendment is crucial for the accused. The principal features of this amendment that provide protection are; the right against coerced self ââ¬â incrimin ation, right to a grand jury, right to protection against double jeopardy, and the right to due process (Miller, Cross, & Jentz, 2008, p. 614). Moreover, this amendment precludes the government from coercing a suspect to provide a self ââ¬â incriminatory testimony (Lupia, 1984, p. 674). ... In addition, the decision in Miranda v Arizona, provides the right to an attorney to felony suspects. However, grand jury witnesses, who fail to enter immunity deals before giving evidence, usually are unaware of whether they are suspects, till such time as the hearings are not concluded. During the hearing such witnesses could be compelled to answer, in the absence of a lawyer. Failure to do so would lead to imprisonment. Such witnesses are also in danger of perjury traps, if they change the facts under oath (Welch, 2005). Under the provisions of the Fourth Amendment, no individualââ¬â¢s person or home can be examined and property impounded, in the absence of a proper warrant or if there is no such warrant, without some special necessity. The warrant should be on the basis of probable cause that evidence of a crime that had been committed could be procured from that place (United States Federal Laws Regarding Privacy and Personal Data and Applications to Biometrics, 2006). Conseq uently, the Fourth Amendment sanctions seizures and searches, under narrow and explicit circumstances. In order to prevent double punishments and duplicative trials, the Double Jeopardy Clause was introduced in US law. The protection offered by this clause was affirmed by the Supreme Court in Abney v United States (Cases, 2008, p. 2007). This decision was diametrically opposed to the decision in United States v Calabrese, wherein the majority permitted the trial to continue, without finalizing the double jeopardy claim (Cases, 2008, p. 2008). Moreover, the Sixth Amendment directs that the accused in every criminal prosecution shall be entitled to a public and speedy trial. Such trial is to be by an impartial jury of the state and district where the crime had been committed. In
